I have a couple of thoughts here. I used to run a small... and rather failing roleplaying forum. It died cuz of drama (Nuuu!) and, so I shall share my wisdom! Or not, just going to talk a bit.
So a couple of thoughts about roleplaying at a forum
1. (Not any particular importance, I am just listing it like this.). It can be rather confusing, when there's a lot of players and the forum is not dedicated to roleplay and has rules set up. When I first started roleplaying, at a forum, it was at a roleplaying thread at a dark souls forum. The problem that arose was this one: A person or three could be in a long standing RP action. Let's say, combat, and if enough time passes, more can be left behind. Rules can be set up, which often slows down progress. "One post per person, until everything have circulated or something happens (one drops out of roleplay).
2. It can be rather hard to keep track of everything. I mentioned in the chat that, roleplays set in certain established universes can alienate people not fan of the show. Which is fine, just worth mentioning. In constructed universes, there are more or less two kinds:
a) One that is built by itself. Think a universe that starts with a basic premise: Like a scaled down version of Touhou's story. Then, from there, characters actions, story explanations and long term story ideas fold out. This can obviously lead to people getting involved with romances, and large conflicts, while others can do their own stuff talking about a large bath. This can of course take many forms, but, more often than not, this one allows for quite a lot of people to do different things, since it's more or less a drawn universe.
b) A completely constructed universe. Think, one that is written like a show's setting, but completely written for the purpose of the roleplay. This often have it easier when fewer people are involved, since often there's an overarching story, that the writer of the setting and backstory came up with.
3. A good piece of advice in roleplaying is to have consistent rules with everyone. A few ways people structure roleplaying posts can be:
a) She opened the door, and said "hello".
b) *She opened the door* hello.
and mix and match and so on. It is perhaps prefered when people do the same in any given roleplaying thread. Always stay consistent with the rules. Often than not, it might be good to have a special amount of lines, or at least a minumum requirement. However, that is up to anyone.
----
Often, too, there can be a quite important task: Keep track of characters. That should be the task of the Opening post, and be edited as things unfold or as new characters are added.
MY propsal is a scenario A roleplay, which we let things unfold as they go, and people just...casually interact and perhaps there will be romance, perhaps conflict. Just. perhaps, "A town, where magic is possible". That, is so open, and it allows for a great deal of stories to unfold. Stories, not made by an author or a writer, but every single person who decides "I want to be a piece of that."
"There is a thousand worlds out there. Not made for us, but by us. We can burn it down, and built it anew. Let's raise hell, and have a ton of fun" // Howshi.
