I think Madoka Magica should be the first one simply due the fact that it's much shorter than either Evangelion or Revolutionary Girl Utena, which would allow much more flexible planning and a higher turn-out rate for the first meeting.

That's a good point. I have heard a lot more about Evangelion though.

Madoka Magica would't be a bad option because of it's length, but I still feel like it has less in-your-face symbolism than the others, making it harder to analyze. What about Serial Experiments Lain?

I think Madoka Magica should be the first one simply due the fact that it's much shorter than either Evangelion or Revolutionary Girl Utena, which would allow much more flexible planning and a higher turn-out rate for the first meeting. Madoka Magica would't be a bad option because of it's length, but I still feel like it has less in-your-face symbolism than the others, making it harder to analyze. What about Serial Experiments Lain? IMO, less in-your-face is a good thing because then everything wouldn't be as obvious, so you have to really think about it and dig deeper. In fact, subtle symbolism allows for a much easier flow when watching the series. When a series is oversaturated with symbolism, it can become distracting and the flow gets disrupted. When you're thinking about every little detail that's in your face, you can't really enjoy the series to the fullest. Madoka Magica does its "subtle symbolism" masterfully, which is one of the reasons why I adore it. Sometimes it makes it obvious but most of it is actually easy to miss. I had to get a friend to point out to me many of the small instances in which I missed something significant and even then, we often had to look up its trope page on symbolism to really get a picture of how much of it was subtle. If you don't care for the symbolism, then you have the option of just watching it for the plot. However if you do care, then it's all in abundance. The fact that you can go either way is also what makes it seem like such a masterpiece. IMO, too much symbolism causes the series to become rough because then you focus on that instead of the other aspects of the series. Also, symbolism needs to be carefully placed and timed, otherwise it's just an amateurish jumble of mess, even if you do understand what it means. Symbolism by itself is worthless because anyone can just stuff one or two symbols into the middle of a plot. A sign of a true masterpiece is if the symbolism is seamlessly integrated into the plot. One of the reasons why Miyazaki films are great is that his messages and symbolism have a balance between subtle and not subtle, and it's never in your face even if the message itself is obvious; there's a difference. There needs to be a balance between symbolism that is meant to be seen at first glance, and symbolism that can only be noticed or understood if you take a closer look.
Serial Experiments Lain wouldn't be a bad first choice, so I'm good with that if it is picked to be the first series that we watch/analyze. I haven't seen it yet but as I said a few days ago, I was already planning on watching it during Thanksgiving vacation anyway.

You make a good point, I just think we're seeing it from two different perspectives. More subtle symbolism makes it harder to pick out and understand, in my opinion, while something like Evangelion has so much in it that it wouldn't be as hard to pick things out and understand what they mean. Either way, I agree with you on picking a 13 episode anime first and I wouldn't mind it if was Madoka Magica. Let's see if the vote changes by tomorrow and if not, we'll go with that. I'm thinking 1-2 episodes for our first meeting if it's going to be next week. Even one would be enough so that we can establish a basis for analysis and make sure that everyone is on board. Meetings shouldn't take more than 30 minutes, anyway.

Hey guys, I know I'm kinda racing ahead, but what do you think of a Korean animated film for film 2? It's called The King of Pigs.

As I told Ken, I'm totally up for it. I'll watch the movie in advance & see if there's enough for us to discuss, but it certainly looks interesting judging by the plot summary

If we're going to start with Madoka, we have to go to at least ep 3. If only because that's when we get the first full swerve the series throws at you
