Meant to post this sooner but I was wondering if anyone here has any podcasts that they listen to regularly. I got into listening to podcasts with one called The Brian & Jill Show, because one of the hosts, Brian Phelps, was the host of the Mark & Brian Radio Program, a morning show I enjoyed listening to when I lived in California. After Mark retired, Brian left the station as well and pursued the podcast for a couple years with his friend Jill Whelan (a.k.a. Vicki Stubing on The Love Boat).
The show stopped new episodes this spring so it's mostly done now. But because of it I came to enjoy podcasts in general and now have a few that I listen to regularly, as they make good listening during the commute to work.
My current top five, in no particular order:
Who Back When (whobackwhen.com/) : A podcast that reviews episodes of the long running sci-fi series Doctor Who. Main host Ponken joins with friends as they review episodes from the original Doctor Who (as of this post they're nearing the end of First Doctor William Hartnell's run), the Eight Doctor audio book stories, and new Doctor Who, where they've just begun on Tenth Doctor David Tennant's run. One reason I'm a fan is that they take fan-submissions for reviews on episodes and read them on the show, and I've become a regular contributor to their classic who reviews since about "The Time Meddler."
Welcome to Night Vale (commonplacebooks.com/welcome-to-night-vale): Take the little town in the middle of nowhere where all the weird stuff happens, then picture what its public news radio must sound like, and you've got Night Vale in a nutshell. The typical episode will have deep voiced host Cecil describe the various happenings around Night Vale, such as the emergence of a mysterious glow cloud that rains dead animals across the street, and the mroe day to day occurrences (such as the local baseball team not letting the dead animal rain force them to cancel their game). Towards the end Cecil will give us the weather, which is actually a musical number provided to the show by various bands and performers. I got to see one of their live shows over the summer and enjoyed it thoroughly.
Cox n' Crendor (soundcloud.com/coxncrendor): Produced by one of my favorite YouTubers, Jesse Cox, and his buddy WowCrendor. This is basically their version of a morning radio show where they talk about random topics, do their own versions of local traffic and weather, sports, and a top news story of the day will typically be the oddest news story they can find that day. Episodes release sporadically but fan support has them stepping up more often lately.
Who's Paying Attention? (sideshownetwork.tv/podcastsDetails.cfm?podcastid=45): I discovered this one through Brian & Jill. Who's Paying Attention is a news podcast hosted by stand up comic Alonzo Bodden as he brings up the recent in politics and other subjects. Alonzo favors the liberal side much more than conservative so, knowing that most peoples politics falls in the broad outline of "I'm right and if you disagree you're an enemy of the state." bear that in mind if you choose to listen.
Writing Excuses (www.writingexcuses.com/): "Fifteen minutes long, because you're in a hurry and we're not that smart." With that tagline the hosts of Writing Excuses bring us a short but sweet look into the world of writing and storytelling. Not just the writing and artistic side, but also the business side. They discuss various topics such as dealing with editors, writing certain subjects such as disabilities, and getting publicity.
These are mine. What are yours, if you have them?
