So Alice1 was never one to really care about anything at all. She lived her life with little to no actual interests in anything. At all, ever. Except... except there was an exception. Not that she realized that herself, but it was a sure thing that the people around her noticed. Most of the time, nothing came out of anything when it came to her. She entered a room: No one noticed or seemed to bother, but lately that had changed and it was bothering Alice, or, if it had been anyone except Alice, it would have bothered them. However, Alice did not really notice, unless you count the time where she snapped and lounged at some students for teasing her, while she was cutting her old papers up with a scissor. That happened about two to three hours before she started to realize the exception. However, it would take three days before she finally did realize. By the way, the kids she lounged at for teasing her? They were not stabbed with the scissors, since Alice put it aside in order to claw at them with her rugged and uncut nails.
That exception to not caring, was the catalyst to make her realize that the exceptionally exceptional exception was actually an exception, and not following the rule. Growing up, Alice absolutely felt that she never had a connection with anyone, let alone her sisters and family. Now, the exception to that rule, happened when she was away from her studies for a week after harming a couple of students. Her cousin came to visit. Her cousin was rather pale, and she looked lonely. However, something about that, something wasn't right. She had something special about her. Something different. She smiled. She smiled so much more than Alice that Alice could feel that her heart slowly melted, in jealousy and sadness.
Her cousin had stayed over at her for two weeks before the incident that left Alice alone for three days. Alice hadn't really known that her cousin, who, by the way, was named Marybeth, did not do anything over the days. She just stayed at home. Alone, apparently, when Alice wasn't there. Now, at least, they could keep each other company. Or, perhaps, not. Alice just laid in bed for the better half of the week, however, dismissedly she had been to Mary up to that point, she could not help but feel a little bored, just laying down for days on end. So, she did what she never would expect herself to do. She opened her mouth and answered Mary's questions. "Why don't you talk to me?" was the particular question that Mary asked, when Alice finally caved into the compulsion to respond. "I... honestly don't know, Mary." She said, in honest confusion. Perhaps it sounded like an excuse, but Mary smiled to that. Well, that and the fact that Alice did answer her question. Alice felt like she would remember that smile forever, since she was the one that created it. She made it, and she was proud of herself.
So perhaps the exception wasn't much of an exception until the first exception to the rule was made. However, that general rule of non-talking was broken forever, at least with her cousin. From that day on, Alice opened up to her. About what she felt, about school, about parents, about her life. Of course, starting in small doses, but by the end of the fifth week of Mary's stay at their home.
The Saturday that week, after dinner, Alice decided to ask Mary a question herself. That question being: "Why are you here?" and Mary's answer was a long one. Filled with tears, disappointment and sadness. Apparently, Mary's parents, Alice's mother's sister, had gotten into economical problems and which turned everything toxic, which turned everything into... exceptionally painful for Mary.
Alice, she had never cared for people, not a lot anyway. Sometimes, you need to care about people by necessity. She also never knew how to handle awkward and situations where people were depressed. She awkwardly put her arms around her cousin, who proceeded to cry in her arms. Which was perhaps the most weird thing of all. She felt a bit embarrassed and rather shy. But, it was a nice bonding moment.
A few weeks passed. Alice had started to drop out of school just to stay with Mary, who had informed Alice's family that she wanted to live there, and she was very welcomed. Mary started to smile even more, and once in a while, but only between them, Alice smiled, too.
Immoral as it may be, Alice started to feel romantic with Mary, not sexual. She told herself, anyway. However weird, Mary was the one that told Alice "I love you," but at first, Alice did not realize the true meaning behind those words. She did, however, a few days later, when she woke up with Mary looking at her. "Uhm... uhm.." Was just a few of the words mentioned that day. And the thing proceeding every other word, from Alice. This... exceptionally creepy situation continued for three days, until it went into an exceptionally exceptional situation, since Alice woke up by being kissed.
But, she smiled, she could not help it. Since Mary, after the kiss, smiled too. In her mind, she was a bit uneasy, but, she took a hold of Mary's hand, and squeezed it. "I love you," she said. Mary kissed her cheek, once more.
1Haa, sorry about the name choice, I just put something that came to mind. I love Alice in Wonderland so yeaaahh.
So this was a weird, incoherent, and rather short and stupid story. But, it was nice. To write. I needed to take my mind of things.
