Decided to review Angel Beats!
I really liked the story. There was so much interesting things such as the SSS, Otonashi's memory and the mysterious character "Angel". My main problem with the series was the fact that the series was 13 episodes long, but they tried to put so much characters and so much plot in these 13 episodes in felt like a jumble sometimes. If it was a little longer it would have been nice. I didn't want more episodes after the ending as I liked it, but I wanted more episodes before the end going into detail with more of the characters. The best episodes IMO were the ones focused around a certain character like Yui. The main reason I probably liked those were the fact that the main characters themselves were pretty bland sadly. Otonashi doesn't really have much characteristics and it makes him feel plain and it feels like any other character could have filled that spot. Angel is pretty lame until the end when they start going into more details about her. Yuri isn't to much better than Otonashi character wise, but as least she has a decent story behind her. The supporting characters are really good in this show and play a part to most of the comedy. Plus I like the few episodes that were focused around them. I felt like this series could have been better, but it is what it is. I personally rate it an 7.5/10, if it could have been double the length I would rate it an 8/10 but it felt way to short considering all the characters and this also led to the plot being a little rough.

I loved this anime. Was a little slow getting started, but it had the perfect balance of carefree fun and serious character backstories. One of my favorite aspects of the show was honestly Girls Dead Monster. That whole album is still my jam years after finishing the series. I give the anime a 10/10, which may sound a little high, but my policy is to give a perfect score to any anime that: A. I can't get off my mind for several days (in a good way, obviously) or B. Makes me cry The latter is pretty hard to do, and the fact that the ending moved me to tears for at least 30 minutes left a lasting impression on me. I'm not really a Key fan, but this is certainly their best work, in my opinion.

This anime ripped the heart out of my chest, and for that reason alone, I loved it. I love anime that makes you feel.

I had Angel Beats recommended to me by a multitude of people and heard a lot of great stuff about it, and after having watched it I was curious if anyone else felt that it was pretty underwhelming. Not to say the show was bad, in fact there was a lot I liked about the show. Before I make any criticisms I want to say that I thought the show's production value was really impressive and that it had probably one of the, if not the best, OST I've ever heard. I also enjoyed the humor for the most part and enjoyed all the characters, and if that last minute or two of the show in combination with the ED wasn't a great ending then I don't know what is. Again, before I make any criticisms, I want to note that I'm writing this to see if anyone else felt the same way as me about the show and to get more perspectives on it, not to bash angel beats for no reason. The story felt interesting and was laced with a sense of omnipotence that kept you guessing at the start, but as I got further into the show and you see how the entire first 7 or so episodes conflict is based off of perhaps the dumbest misunderstanding ever, and it takes the characters the entire arc to figure out, I don't know how you can enjoy watching that. The episodes before the Shadow Monster episodes were fine, certainly nothing to rave about but they weren't terrible, just felt like filler I guess. On the other hand, the Shadow Monster episodes felt like they just came out of nowhere, and while they made sense for the show thematically (emphasizing living life without no regrets, moving on and accepting your life, etc etc), they felt so out of touch with the rest of the series and just weren't very interesting. Now I rambled on for a while about the plot, but it really wasn't that big of a deal, so long as the show had good characters it doesn't matter, right? I heard from a lot of people that Angel Beats was pretty character driven, something I love in anime, but after watching the show I don't see it at all. All the characters, while likable, were 1-dimensional stereotypical anime characters. Giving them a tragic past does not make them better characters, yet the authors thought that by giving them a tragic past, and having them struggle with it for all about 5 minutes makes them a good character than they are sadly mistaken. I find it impossible to empathize with basically any of the characters outside of maybe the last episode because you don't see them deal with any meaningful every day problems, and the conflict you see is generally introduced and solved in the same episode. While the main characters had little to no character development, it felt as if they didn't even want to try giving the side characters ANY meaningful conflict or development. In the end I just felt that the characters were very weak and were entirely 1-dimensional outside of their childhood trauma, which is pretty weak writing. There were some more things that bothered me, the show was too melodramatic, comedy was often placed into the show awkwardly, the pacing felt off, but a lot of those complaints are smaller or subjective so I won't go into them further, but they do still exist. As someone who came into Angel Beats, enjoyed the first couple episodes, and really tried their hardest to like the series, I just couldn't do it. And again, not saying the show is bad, just feel like it had some big problems that I was curious if others agreed with because I know Angel Beats is really popular around here.
If anyone here shares this opinion I'd be interested to hear what they have to say, and same with others who disagree I'd be interested in talking about it and seeing some other perspectives.
Plot was pretty weak (but not enough to kill the show), characters were just poorly written, 1-dimensional, and uninteresting. Animation and the OST carried the show EASILY around a 7/10

For a few seconds I might have been a little sad than realized something. How could I grow attached to characters that one I had only known for 13 episodes and two had hardly any development what so ever? Although everyone is different so we both had different reactions at the end. I can see how some could be a little sad at the end though (despite various factors).

I seem to react differently than most people when it comes to anime. It wasn't that I felt an attachment to the characters; my heart just went out to Kanade and Otonashi at the end. The only other anime to make me feel that way have been Blue Exorcist, Kannazuki no Miko, and El Cazador de la Bruja...possibly another that I'm forgetting, but I'm half brain-dead at the moment.
