Alright guys, at this point Serial Experiments Lain and Madoka Magica are tied, so we'll do Madoka first, since it got two votes first, and Serial Experiments later in the year.
The plan for now is to watch the first 4 episodes by December 20th and we will settle on a more specific date and time as we get closer.
I would suggest taking a few notes for things you'd like to bring up if you plan on watching it sooner rather than later. Additionally, it would be great if we could have a different person leading the discussion each time, so if you have a lot to say about Madoka Magica, feel free to volunteer! Leading would essentially just mean finding a few noticeable themes or motifs and bringing up questions and comments that you or someone else might have.

I would love to join as well Awesome, well it looks like we will definitely be watching Madoka Magica, so try to have those first 4 episodes completed on your own by the holidays. I'm thinking it would be best for us to use some other means of communication besides Shout Box, so I'll be creating a chatroom on Chatzy within the coming week. Yeah, totally...I'll add you to the list. Just as a side note, anyone can join whenever and you don't have to attend every meeting either. Just make sure that if you do want to participate in a meeting, you've watch the assigned episodes beforehand. |

Okay guys, with roughly two weeks left until our first meeting, I think we should begin to set the groundwork for discussion so everyone has enough time to prepare beforehand. First, I would really recommend checking out this blog post before we meet. It will give you a good idea of what to look for and what to expect from our meetings: animated-discussions.blogspot.com/2012/02/analyzing-anime-101-notes.htmlSecond, I would like to begin thinking about topics and questions for us to discuss. Some of my discussion questions right now include: 1. In what way does the setting influence the plot and theme of the show? What do you believe the writer is trying to say by using this location, place, time, etc? 2. How does the style of animation reflect the anime's tone? What emotions do you think the artist is trying to evoke through this style? 3. Does Madoka Magica follow a certain "formula" per se? Based off of the character models, can we make any predictions about how certain characters will act, respond to their environment, etc? Feel free to bring up some of your own topics for discussion. Anything, including questions of clarity, is welcome! Come prepared to talk objectively about the show. While personal opinions are always welcome and encouraged, our goal, like that of all analysis, will be to determine what the writers are trying to say and how they're saying it. |

The meeting should take 20-60 minutes (no longer than 60) & that way we could follow it with an Anime Movie Night meeting. What do you guys think?
