I'd estimate I've seen about 3/4 mainstream anime & 1/4 anime few people have heard of before. One of my favorites in the latter category is Sora no Manimani, which I stumbled across while trying to find Outer Space-related anime for a presentation in my Astronomy class nearly two years ago. The anime itself is about two childhood friends who start an Astronomy club and their adventures recruiting members and going on club trips. Surprisingly, there's quite a bit of factual information in here and I was able to learn more about star-gazing and constellation groups while watching it. While the plot summary wouldn't interest most people from the start, I appreciated the light-hearted tone it had and the cheesy humor thrown in for good measure. All in all, I would say that this is one of the best "unpopular" anime series I've seen and I would suggest it to anyone who enjoys a good somewhat-humerous slice of life.
So what about you? When have you gone against the crowd and found a lesser-known anime that you enjoyed more than you expected?

Hmmm i dont really know if the anime is unpopular though+ its kinda subjective o.o , probably one of my favorites , sayonara zetsubou sensei ( not all gets or likes the wierd negativity ), sakura no pet kanojo , seto no hyanome some that comes in my mind : gintama , hayate no gotoku , moyashimon and ergo proxy , probably hve to check my computer anime list for the others.

I liked Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei & Hayate no Gotoku too  It can be subjective, but what I mean is just anything the average anime fan wouldn't recognize (ie something that isn't listed in the top 200 on MAL) |

It can be subjective, but what I mean is just anything the average anime fan wouldn't recognize (ie something that isn't listed in the top 200 on MAL)
